…a piece of my heart will always belong to …

Oakland, California.

Gritty. Beautiful. Revolutionary. Magical. Culturally iconic. Epicenter of style, slang, solidarity.

Learned everything I know about everything here. I came of age here.

We call it “The Town”. We have our own language, our own way of being in the world. We cannot be defeated. We’re underdogs for life. We’re always hustling. We’ve got game.

It’s that mindset that has imbued my whole POV and orientation. Oakland has given birth to many movements for equal rights, justice, accessibility, and environmental conservation. I consider myself lucky to have spent so much time in this gritty little city on the Bay.

East Coast born, West Coast raised.

Black Lives Matter.

A movement partially born in Oakland by Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Ayo Tometi.

Resistance, activism, organization, education, empowerment, access, opportunity, and justice. For EVERY BODY.
